PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE MINISTRY.
Christ’s ministry must be the Supreme model of our ministry. He displayed competent leadership in his ministry. Christian leader’s ambition must be to follow the model of Christ leadership. Thus the principles displayed here will enable one to exercise Christ-like ministry leadership.
1. THE MIND OF CHRIST.
Let this mind be in you, which was in Christ Jesus (Phil.2:5). Jesus had both negative and positive human emotions. He had negative emotions such as: hunger, anger, agony, groaning, weeping etc. and positive emotions such as compassion, joy etc. He demonstrated self management over His human emotions. He displayed human emotions in a high form, still He never sinned in the way He expressed His emotions. He handled His emotions with love and zeal. Leaders must handle their emotions with love and zeal to bring things in order according to the will of God. We should exercise self-control over our emotional outburst and express our emotion appropriately. We should not allow our emotions to control our behaviour and lead us into sinful acts. Man looketh on the outward appearance but the Lord looketh on the heart (1 Sam.16:7). Thus God’s primary concern is our mind (our inner being).
2. THE WAY JESUS CONTROLLED HIS EMOTIONAL IMPULSES
Jesus controlled his emotional impulses by setting His mind on His Father, to do the will of His Father (Heb.10:7). He was renewing His mind by quoting and doing always what the Scripture says about Himself (Heb.10:5-10; Lk.4:16-21; Mt.4:4; 4:7,10). And He girded up His mind with humbleness and gentleness (Mt.11:29). Every leader must set his mind on the Spirit, renewing his mind always by reading and doing what the “Sermon on the Mount” says and must gird-up his mind with humbleness and gentleness. Jesus never had negative emotions such as: pessimism, discouragement, doubt, cynicism, suspicion, gloom, and phobia. He trusted His Father and never worried about anything concerning His life. Leaders must avoid the negative emotions mentioned and trust God and never worried about anything.
3. THE WISDOM OF JESUS.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him- the Spirit of wisdom (Isa.11:2). When Christ started teaching in the Synagogue the whole people were amazed and began to ask, “Where did this man get this wisdom (Mt.13:54). Christ grew and was filled with wisdom (Lk.2:40). He is the wisdom of God (1Cor.1:24). All treasure of knowledge and wisdom are hidden in Christ (Col.2:3). Spiritual wisdom is from above and Jesus is from above and all wisdom is hidden in Him. Jesus is the source of all spiritual wisdom. When we are connected to Him, we have His wisdom. Spiritual wisdom is pure and it comes to a pure mind. And a mind filled with wisdom has peace, is loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, impartial, sincere and has good fruit. Jesus answered all questions asked to Him with wisdom and He sometimes refer them where it is written in the Scripture. He used His wisdom to explain the word of God that even the people were satisfied with the responses He gave (Lk.20:20-26; 20:27-39). The Bible is the wisdom of God in print. Growth in wisdom depends on meditating and doing what the Scripture says. Spiritual wisdom enables one to understand what Scripture says and what it means. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2Tim.2:15).Totally abandoned to Christ, being filled with the Holy Spirit and diligently studying the word of God enable us to have sufficient wisdom for handling our ministry.
4. JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT.
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power: and He went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the Devil, because God was with Him (Acts 10:38). He was anointed with the Holy Spirit and became a competent leader. The wish and desire of every leader should be the infilling of the Holy Spirit, this will make us competent leaders, because Holy Spirit in us gives us prophetic message, helps us in our weaknesses, helps us to drive out demons, helps us to testify about Jesus, counsels us and convicts us of our sins, righteousness and judgment. Working in our ministry without the ministry of the Holy Spirit in our lives and ministry, one will become a mess in ministry.
5. JESUS AND MATERIALISM.
When Jesus was in His ministry, He said, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where to lay His head (Lk.9:58). And in His teaching He warned “Take heed and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of things which he possesseth (Lk.12:15). And He says to his Disciples: “Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple (Lk.14:33). Again Jesus asked the young ruler : “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come follow me. And He teaches: “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money (Mt.6:24). The love of money is a root of all evil, eager for money makes one wander from faith and to pierce himself with grieves (1 Tim.6:10). Thus, when one places money or any material thing above God he becomes idol worshipper. In Ephesians 5:5: Greed is described as idolatry. Greed about money is idol worship but greed about Spiritual maturity is godliness. In all Jesus is telling leaders and every Christian to be spiritual minded and not to be worldly minded. And He prescribed giving as the remedy to materialism (Mt.5:42). Leaders dumping money in the bank is not what Jesus required. Keeping billions of money in the bank is storing treasures where moth and rust will destroy it, even thieves can break in and steal it. But giving to the poor or those in need is storing treasure where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in or steal.
6. JESUS AND TIME.
Jesus said, “My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at thy house with my disciples” (Mt.26:18). Jesus practiced event time not clock time. He knew what He had come to accomplish and His entire life concentrated on the definite timing of its accomplishment. Every leader has something specific to accomplish for God. Base on our call, we need to time with God and have our entire life concentrated on the precise timing of the accomplishment of our call. Jesus measured time with what He is called to accomplish. Being in haste measuring time with clock and calendar is not the key but waiting on God measuring events related to our call is the key of event time.
7. JESUS AND PEOPLE.
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick (Mt.14:14). And when his disciples asked Him to drive the people away, He replied: “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” In relationship management compassion and generosity is necessary. Compassion and generosity is required in ministry. Considering only the rich in the church in order to receive from them and neglecting the poor and needy in the church because they do not have is not a good relationship management. Therefore, having Christ-like mind; controlling your emotional impulses; having and practicing the wisdom of God; being filled with the Holy Spirit; loving God more than material things; scheduling your program with event time and welcoming and giving to the poor and those in need will make you become competent leader and will make your ministry effective.
